Inspired by the 1960s American television sitcom , Gilligan's Island , Gilligan's café and bar on Magnetic Island , North Queensland, has closed its doors , its rustic bamboo furniture probably converted into rafts to help Pacific islanders survive rising sea levels due to climate change .
Our waterfront roundsman consumed jungle juice on the premises when Gilligan's first opened many years ago. In his report on the closure he included the following photograph of an impressive coat of arms , featuring the noble sounding name of Monkhouse, on a cruiser in the Magnetic Island marina, claiming it is connected with the superior Howells from Gilligan's Island , but we reckon he is pulling our wooden leg .
From his smelly kitbag , the Shipping Reporter produced several other shots of Gilligan's from the early days covering the layout , its bamboo furniture , a hut, some of the tasty , fancy tucker , and one in which the lifebuoy from the S.S. Minnow is visible , which would go well in this blog's cluttered den .
Well, Gilligan , Little Buddy, we hope you and the Skipper wash up on another island and start another café bar serving artistically displayed tucker like the plate below .
