The dramatic effect of a giant crocodile appearing on the Cairns waterfront inspired this drawing on the front of a circa l920 postcard by an artist simply shown as Blom . A North Queensland postcard researcher is on the trail of the imaginative minded Mr Blom , who he suspects was a local .
In the highly animated scene , a man has climbed to the top of the mast of a yacht , others are falling over , running , a Chinese coolie carrying a load on a pole has lost his footing , a policeman appears to be waving a baton , a coastal protection gun could be pointed at the croc and an ecclesiastically attired gent seems about to raise his umbrella as protection against the sun and the evil saurian.
While the illustration is a delight , a rare and desirable piece of Australiana , the handwritten message on the back to Hilda makes it doubly interesting. Wonder if the offer was increased?
