A quick check of Townsville's war memorials by our vigilant waterfront roundsman recently turned up a plaque for the Australian Peacekeeper and Peacemaker Veterans' Association, marking the 60th anniversary of the movement , started in l947 . Not only is the plaque hard to read, it is surrounded by dead leaves ; the black blob could be due to an avian attack or fruit dropped off the tree below which the plaque is situated.
The plaque is not far from other war memorials which from time to time have been found in need of care and maintenance .
In the case of the fountain , part of the Victory in the Pacific 50th anniversary celebration , at the Railway Oval , weeds were found growing about its base , seeds were continuing to fall into the water from an overhanging tree , which could be trimmed back to overcome the problem , and there was a seed carpet on the path . The fountain seemed to be working properly , the erupting part , reported by the Shipping Reporter, fixed.
The Shipping Reporter also noticed the clock on the railway building was fast when he checked his chronometer .
At the nearby railway old ticket office ,with its WWl roll of honour, old tiles and ornate ceiling , well worth a visit , it required a sweep .
