World War ll photographs at Townsville Airport highlighting the American military presence in the city, including the arrival of General Douglas MacArthur, above,at Garbutt Air Base in 1944 , attract much attention .They are from the collection of American Arch Fraley , involved in photography for more than 50 years. During the war Fraley served as a photographer/waist gunner in the 5th Bomber Group USAAF, based in Townsville and Charters Towers.
Fraley and his wife , Lorraine, ran a business on Magnetic Island and compiled and published the invaluable A Pictorial History of Magnetic Island, full of great early photos and information .
