Early days |
At first
glance , this distinctive
building could be mistaken as
a mosque. It is ,
however, a Heritage listed early Burns Philp
office in Townsville , Queensland , now the
venue
for the nightclub
Santa Fe Gold, which boasts showgirls
of style and
dancers of pleasure . The BP company
kicked off in the l870s when two Scots, James Burns and
Robert Philp, established a regular shipping line between
Sydney and Townsville to supply their
own stores
The cupola on top of the
building was used to
watch for ships coming into
port .
In Sydney , the spectacular former Burns Philp main
office , in Bridge Street , also Heritage listed,
now boasts
the upmarket Rockpool restaurant , run by Neil Perry , tucker
adviser to
James Packer and
Qantas . Burns Philp & Co carved out
a vast empire in
shipping , Pacific Island trading , mail runs, plantations, eventually
biting off more
than it could
chew in the 1990s , especially in the international condiment field and antibiotics , and folded,
the grand Sydney headquarters
, below , sold.
