Despite the dire weather forecast, photographer Vallis nevertheless sallied forth along the North Queensland election trail .
Along the way, he snapped a swag of interesting subjects ,checked election corflutes for various parties. The wind picking up and it beginning to spit , after torrential overnight rain, he decided to head home.
Along the way, he noticed what looked like the stray Torres Strait Pigeon -spotted by the Queen of the Jungle recently- on a powerline. Because of his fascination with birds, see his recent stumbling Coucal chase, he pointed the camera up at his latest feathered target .
In doing so, he noticed that way up in the sky , in swirling clouds, there appeared to be something very small and stationary . It was not a plane , no aircraft engine could be heard . It just hung there . Strange. Could it be a military helicopter? No rotating blades evident. A balloon ?
His glasses misting up , rain increasing , he tried to get the hard to see mystery object in focus, just blazed away at the UFO in its general direction .
Tottering home , cold and damp, Vallis hit himself with a mug of coffee and slipped into a dressing gown . Then he downloaded the chip , eager to see if he had captured the UFO. At first it looked as if he had failed in the attempt . But then , due to much enhancing and cropping , there was the UFO - identified as a slowly gliding large eagle , far left, the pigeon on the right .
