In the excellent ABC television's Back Roads series, Heather Hewitt recently travelled to the fabulously rich early Victorian goldmining town of Walhalla . The above faded print ,by W.Lee, mounted on board , of a schoolboy , David Slattery ,who took milk to Walhalla about 1900 , has surfaced on Magnetic Island .
The print was issued as part of the Save Walhalla Fund. A former convict played a large part in the early goldrush which resulted in a boomtown, which included a newspaper , the Walhalla Chronicle which opened in January 1870. Many years ago , in Adelaide , the writer of this post was shown a unique photo album of Walhalla's wild boom days , which included views of the state's richest deposit , the Long Tunnel Mine .
