Odd experiences of wandering correspondent .
From Broome , famous for its pearls, renowned Darwin agronomist Robert Wesley-Smith sent another entertaining , illustrated update of his travels , which included the above striking photograph of Derby artwork .
It seems that in Broome he experienced the luxury of staying at the Continental Hotel , with two swimming pools , Queen-sized beds in each room. When he booked in , he cracked a joke, asked if they had a cheaper Broom(e) cupboard in which he could stay . Very droll .
He bumped into a prominent cattleman he knew in the Conti , there having been a conference of cattlemen in Broome . After dining with him, he managed to find room in the cluttered Honda Jazz , drove the cattleman to the airport.
Despite having been to Broome before, Wesley-Smith got lost trying to find his way back to the hotel , had to stop and ask " a callow youth " the way.
On reading about local wrecks , he got the urge to go exploring in the mangroves , but decided it might be tempting fate to do so .
He drove the Jazz to an automatic car washing machine for a well deserved scrub , inserted $20, it vanished , nothing happened . A coin operated hose enabled him to wash large amounts of red dust from the workhorse.
During his travels he photographed the above all terrain front end loader which reminded him of a smaller machine used when he took cattle to Timor from Darwin on a barge .
