Following the torrential monsoonal rain and flooding , increasing, swirling red dust from the inland engulfed Townsville. The haze was so thick the mainland rapidly faded from view as ferries headed for Magnetic Island .
Magnetic Island, below , was also swallowed up by the dust which stretched far out to sea .
