EXTENSIVE ISLAND BEACH DAMAGE

Panoramic view of Esplanade section of  Nelly Bay Beach taken last year  revealing the vertical sand front making it vulnerable  to erosion , king tides, wild weather. Each year  a  large amount of money is  spent moving sand back and forth  without addressing the need for a  substantial structure , perhaps a revetment, like the one at Clifton ,below ,  near Cairns, to protect this important part of  Magnetic Island .

After recent deluge , damage  at Nelly Bay   caused by  underground stream  near  large  fig tree  at  the  extreme right of  panoramic view .There has  been  deep concern  about the  survival  of the tree  for a long  time because of  collapsing  foreshore. A vast amount has been spent annually moving   sand backwards and forwards  along the beach without   really  tackling  the  wider  problem .

Further along , tree collapsed into washaway  .
