DROWNING TRAGEDY

Framed  in Tasmania  , this unusual  item  listed  for $1100   by  Douglas  Stewart  Fine  Books. Melbourne  , is  a  silk  broadside -  an elegiac  poem -in memory of master  mariner  ,  Captain Charles Dudfield , skipper of the   London Missionary Society schooner Ellengowan , which sailed  between  Queensland and  New Guinea  for   years, who  drowned  in   the  Brisbane River   in  October    l882.  

The   poem was  composed by  a  Townsville  journalist , F.W.Marks , thought to  have  been a close friend of  Dudfield's , who  resided  at  Cooktown , in  Far  North  Queensland .  

Brisbane  Courier  newspaper account  said   Captain Dudfield,32  , whose parents lived  at  Emu Bay , Tasmania ,   fell  into  the  river   when  a   fire  broke  out  aboard  the   new    cutter  Florence   during  the  night  . 

He   had  come to  Brisbane to  take  delivery  of  the   cutter  and  sail it  back to  Cooktown with a crew  of  two .
