EARLY BARRIER REEF ARTISTS

 In the  l950s, aspiring   Townsville artist  Walter E. Badcoe   featured  in   the  Melbourne  Art Training Institute  publication  for  having    designed  the above  award  winning  cover  in  the Student Section   of   an Australian Writers  and  Artists' Federation contest.   Badcoe , who lived in 40 Corcoran Street,Currajong  Estate , had   made  nearly a  thousand pounds in his spare  time due  to a  commercial  art  course ,  kept  busy  illustrating  catalogues .   
The renowned graphic artist and industrial designer Gert Sellheim drew  the above poster  promoting  Australia's Great Barrier  Reef   for the Australian National Travel Association. He  was  one  of the  first   poster  artists  to  work in a semi abstract style in  Melbourne , later adapted Aboriginal art to advertising .    Born in Estonia, he studied in Continental  studios  and  migrated   to  Australia  from  Germany  in  the  l930s.
