SHARK INFESTED WATERS / ENDANGERED TOURISTS / SWIMMING MEMORABILIA

Concern about  sharks  is revealed  by  the   flimsy  ,illustrated and  worn pages  of  a  small   pamphlet    promoting   Magnetic Island  and  the North  in 1922  . Produced   by  the  Magnetic  Island Shark  Protection  Committe  in  a  bid to   raise  funds to  build a   protective   enclosure   for  swimmers , it is one of many interesting items on  display  in  the   latest   Magnetic  Museum  exhibition , spotted  by  our Shipping Reporter  .

There    is   mention    in   the  text   that  Magnetic Island is  attracting  increasing  visitors  from  south  who   together  with   locals   require   protection   from  sharks.  Over the  years , many Victorians   fleeing winter  came  North , often by   steamer , visited   the island , bought  and built  houses . Now  more than 100,000 people   visit  the island annually  , which  now  has  several  swimming  enclosures .

Recently  the   island's  Alma Bay Surf Life Saving Club  started using a drone for  shark  patrol.   There   was  a  shark  attack  there  in  1929  which claimed  the  life  of  18 year old  Harry Weatherall .  Many tiger sharks   are caught  off  the island .

The Shipping Reporter  said  another  item of interest  in the  Museum exhibition  is  a  showcase  displaying   a   circa   1938  embroidered   cloth    bearing  the  insignia  of  the Picnic  Bay  Surf Life Saving   Club  and  signatures  of  early  lifesavers  and  community  members .

Another  swimming   related   item  is  a  1930s era   woollen  swmsuit   from Townsville , not  your  trim  Speedo  or  budgie  smuggler .

Recent visitors to the Museum have  come  from far and  wide - America , Canada , New Zealand , one person recalled having  dug an  early  well  nearby .
