The latest oddity added to the Little Darwin cluttered den is a knitted mermaid , seen here sandwiched between bookends . She was a surprise gift from an arty and crafty Magnetic Islander as a reward for this blog raising the plight of the mysterious fibreglass mermaid , which appeared without explanation on rocks at the entrance to the island.
In defence of our extensive coverage , some suggesting it is obsessive, we repeat where else in the world would a large mermaid suddenly appear at the entrance to a popular tourist resort -described as Townsville's jewel in the crown- and get such paltry coverage ,including its mutilation, from the mainland media?
Little Darwin understands larger mermaids are being knitted on the island and will be Christmas presents for unsuspecting , lucky interstate recipients. Mermaids could become a bigger island industry than two-headed Tasmanian Teddy Bears
