"' GREEN"' DARWIN PERFORMANCE

This was the colourful  scene at  the Charles Darwin University   on May 8  when   Ego  Lemos and  choir  from  East  Timor   and   the   Darwin Timorese  choir  combined  to   produce  an evening of  Music for the Environment

Interestingly , Ego Lemos, seen   performing   in  the   following  close  up  photograph,  is  known as " the  permaculture  guru" of Timor- Leste . He  organises  large  gatherings  of   children from  schools  there  at  which they are  taught  permaculture  to  help  them  improve  their  living  conditions .

Permaculture  books  were on sale  at  the university  concert .

In the  audience  was Darwin agronomist   Robert Wesley-Smith, a longtime  supporter of  East Timor, who  first  met  Ego  in 1999 in the emerging country after  the  long struggle for freedom . At  the time he  commissioned   Ego, studying agricultural science, to draw up a report on  the agriculture   of  Atauro  island , reached by ferry from  Dili ,  used as a prison settlement  by  the  Portugese and   Indonesians .

A singer-songwriter , Ego composed Balibo , used in the  2009 film of that name , which  won  two  awards .

At the present moment  Wesley-Smith  is using  permaculture techniques to try and  grow  a   prize-  winning  giant pumpkin  at  the  Darwin Show .

When a Timor - Leste   government delegation   recently  visited Darwin  Wes  put  forward  an   idea on  how to improve the   nourishment   of  the  nation's  children  by using  Territory  milking  buffaloes  ,who produce high milk  fat.
