LAMENT FOR A LITTLE DARWIN ASIAN CORRESPONDENT

Missing  in  a  new  dimension of  the  mind.

While it  is sad  to hear about your disappearance  and  the impact on your family, we feel certain you are being watched over by a herd of sacred elephants , perhaps  by  the one  that  inspired King Rama IV  of Siam  to establish  the  Order  of  the  White  Elephant.

As you were  once  nominated  for something like the Order of the Million Elephants and  White Parasol   for coming   to  the aid of  a  representative of  Cambodia  , in Melbourne , you  will  be  at  ease in the company  of  thundering   pachyderms.

In  your  last  visit  to  LIttle  Darwin  , before departing with your considerate  activist  wife,  and  Asian  collection ,  to  a new , uncertain  life in  Canberra , you told  the  fascinating  tale  of   relatives who  had  lived  in  a   decrepit house on  an  old mine site  in  Ballarat or Bendigo  , Victoria ,  with   glass  tubes, used  to  hold  junket  tablets,  filled  with  gold dust  in  the cellar  .

Over the  years , as you travelled about Asia , you showered  Little  Darwin  with  gold in the form of  unusual  mixed  ephemera   picked up   at   markets, in  shops , bookstores...postcards,  pamphlets , even a breast  enhancing   powder  from  Malaysia .

Messages  sent  by  you and your wife  from exotic locations are stored in a  filing cabinet  ; a  Thai fisherman's   jacket  you  sent   is  still  worn  .

Many  lively   discussions  about  your  travels  were  had  with  you  two  at  tea parties, above ,  on  an Asian  tablecloth ,  at your grand  island home , which  you  said  reminded  you  of  the  Pacific Island residence in Somerset   Maugham's   1923  short story,  Rain .
