DARWIN WATERFRONT ACTION ON FORMER HIPPIE HIGHWAY PAD , PROPOSED NEW SILK ROAD EXTENSION IN TOP END

Not far  from where  hippies who  passed through  on  the  trail that ran  down through  Portuguese  Timor   in  the  l960s  to  early 1970s  and  built  tree  houses  on   Lameroo  Beach  ,   Darwin ,  prelimary  steps  are  now underway which  could see   a  Westin  luxury  hotel , artist's impression   above , built  for  Landbridge,  the  Chinese   company  given  the  contentious  99-year  lease  of  the  port .

The proposed  six storey hotel ,  with a  rooftop  link to the city plateau ,  variously reported  to   cost $200million  and  $250million , is to be constructed on  a  site not far  from parliament house  (no bugging , please )  relinquished  by  Toga.  Initially ,  the  popular ,  long  established  Deck Chair Theatre  at  Lameroo  was  concerned that   the   hotel  would  be   built   nextdoor.
Lameroo   has long  been   used  by   fringe dwellers and  during  tough economic  times . The  Darwin Council   raided   hippies  and   dismantled   their  distinctive   tree  houses , the  area  called  the Royal Lameroo Hilton .  A hippie   girl  who arrived at Darwin Airport from overseas  was  found to have a  pet monkey   hidden  under her  skirt  and cried when   it  was  taken  from  her .

In  another  waterfront project , old  fuel storage  tanks  are  to be removed and    a   Bali  waterbom   slide   complex  constructed  on  the site  to  add  to  the  already existing  wave   pool  attraction.   (In  Queensland ,   Townsville  recently  raised   the   possibility  of   having  a   wave   pool   like  Darwin ).
