TROUBLED BRIDGES OVER ISLAND WATERS

Magnetic Island, Townsville's so-called jewel in the crown, now has  two  bridges  out of operation , yet  the mainland media  seems  not to  realise this is a  situation which   requires close  attention , follow ups.

The above  photo shows  some of  the damage  done  to  the  important  Sooning Street   bridge  across  Gustav Creek, Nelly Bay, on  December 19 and 20  when more than  400mm of  rain fell in 36 hours. It was closed off  , traffic diverted around it , causing   damage  to roads.

There  has  been further   damage to the bridge  and   vague  statements  made  about  whether it  can be repaired  or  if   a  major  bridge  replacement will  be  required at  a very high  cost .

Then  the   Townsville  City Council  started  removing the  decking  over the pedestrian  footbridge at  the island's  popular   Alma Bay at  an apparent  cost  of  $50,000.  However,  this  was  stopped  due  to   the   weather.
