A member of the Darwin Detectorists' Club, armed with a new , underwater metal detector , has been looking for gold in the Townsville region. On Magnetic Island, he did find gold - gold beer bottle tops .
Wading into Townsville's Ross River , he worked over a sandbar and came up with a 1959 threepence, about 20 lead sinkers and a rusty early mobile phone .
In high dudgeon, he has flown back to Darwin to resume the hunt for a treasure trove, having recently found a cheap ring and a bangle up there, before that a 1945 penny .
