A 19th century drawing of prominent English racehorse thoroughbred ,Musket , a leading sire in Australia and New Zealand, whose progeny included the famous Carbine ,considered to be one of the greatest racehorses in the world , who won the 1890 Melbourne Cup .
In 1878 Musket was imported into Victoria by the Auckland Stud Company, then shipped to NZ where he was initially used to breed coach horses .Musket's portrait was painted by the noted equine artist , Martin Stainforth .
The pen and ink , thought to have been by I. Bird, is one of many items of interest in the recent Douglas Stewart Fine Books , Melbourne , acquisitions , priced at $1650.
At the same time Douglas Stewart was offering for $3500 1883 newspapers printed aboard a Scottish emigrant ship bound for Moreton Bay, Queensland
