With world attention focussed on the D-Day 75th anniversary , the garrison city of Townsville , North Queensland , marked the occasion by continuing its neglect of war memorials . In the case of the Victory in the Pacific fountain in the Railway Oval , which has a long history of neglect, at the very start of the Civic Pride Trail, it was good to see the thong which had been floating in the top chamber had been removed - it now visible, above , on the ground .
An indication of the inadequate maintenance of the area around the fountain is the condom photographed in the walkway . And not far away is part of the car hubcap which had been inside the top chamber for weeks , now also in the walkway with other rubbish.
The nearby bus shelter was in its usual grotty state . In the past, this blog has repeatedly drawn attention to the unsatisfactory situation which exists a short distance from the Townsville Bulletin office ,outside which there is now a large For Lease sign , which has gone unnoticed by the entire local media .
On the same day, at the Coral Sea Battle memorial in the Anzac Memorial Park there was a build up of leaves and other pieces off surrounding trees.
