For weeks now, the neglected Victory in the Pacific 50th anniversary memorial fountain at a busy Townsville intersection has been showing signs of leaking . In addition, water appears to be coming out of a nearby Optus cover in the uneven footpath and it is hoped that it will not affect operations and cost of the disastrous NBN . There are two clear leakages at the base of the brickwork , shown by the following photographs .
This view shows the leak near the recently touched up gilt lettering on the plaque for the Railway Oval, reopened during the VP50 celebrations in 1995. The mayor at the time was Tony Mooney . There is increasing graffiti at the adjacent bus stop shelter .
Next year attempts will be made to excavate two WWl guns given to Townsville as souvenirs of the war to end all wars and , somehow , they ended up stored in a council shed for many years , then buried.
