During the current resumed sorting and culling of Little Darwin's files , out charged the armed Great White Hunter , Allan Stewart , in a full page advertisement for the Darwin Safari Camp at Nourlangie , east of the Alligator River , which guaranteed you would pot a buffalo during a hunting, fishing and shooting trip .
It was P3 of the June 1, l960 edition of The Bulletin , Sydney , in a special wool issue. There is a photo of American big game hunter "Woody" Woodhill, from California ,with his first buffalo. Other renowned American hunters praise Nourlangie , 120 miles east of Darwin , in the text.
A surprise find on Page 74 was the above spoofy cartoon by Sid Black about Northern Territory shooting safaris .
Described as one of the Territory's colourful characters , Stewart with a military background , into politics, advertising and public relations, in 1969 published The Green Eyes Are Buffaloes about Nourlangie ,which teemed with wildlife .
On December 5 , 2014 , Little Darwin ran a classic extensive post headed UNFORGETTABLE SAFARI WITH THE GREAT WHITE HUNTER by a "mysterious mug punter " with the nom de plume ,Shawtodds . It was an absolute tour de force in which it mentioned Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser had been charged with fish poaching in the Territory.
It can now be revealed that the author was jovial veteran journalist and fishing enthusiast , the late Peter Blake , then living in New York, who once fielded as a bookmaker at Darwin's Fannie Bay racecourse.
Pete was a member of the Australian Blake media dynasty involved in the fabulous Sydney Kings Cross Whisper , the short lived New Zealand Kiwi Whisper , Fishing News newspaper , a couple of fishing tackle shops, a radio fishing news service , bawdy records , a marital aids mail order business, etc.
Described as Australia's answer to America's Damon Runyon , of Guys and Dolls Fame , who dealt with Broadway and its gangsters in the Roaring Twenties , Peter had a racey writng style, often expressed in fishing stories he penned .
In Darwin, he played a major part in the production of two satirical publications , Fannie Bay Whisper and Troppo , which included old nude photographs from the Kings Cross Whisper.
The writer of this post went on entertaining fishing trips with Blake in Darwin and one to Nourlangie .
Also rediscovered in the current sorting out of Little Darwin's files was another Peter Blake fishing story sent us from New York, where he was working on the New York Post.
It was a send up , in his inimitable style , with a distinct Damon Runyon touch , of a badly run charter fishing trip he went on in America in the l980s , which the New York Post declined to run .
