NEW HOUSE IN THE BLOCK GETS THE CHOP

An indication  of   the   severe   housing  shortage  is  the fact that  Sunbirds   started   renovating an old nest , obviously with the intention to move back in.  One industrious bird was  snapped , below, working on the nest  hanging  underneath a  back veranda , unoccupied  for  more  than  a year

For some unknown reason, the Sunbirds  disappeared, but were seen from time  to  time making a   fleeting  inspection   of   the  nest .

In the backyard suddenly appeared  noisy Crows,  Kookaburras   and  Currawongs  who  have a  record of not only knocking down Sunbird nests, but eating  eggs and  devouring  baby  birds, including   Curlews.

The Currawongs upset the resident Curlews;the Crows  descended in numbers to  drink  from  water  containers and  had  to  be  chased  away with  shots from  a  water pistol.

Early one morning , it was   noticed that  the  Sunbird  residence  shown here  was  missing . While  searching for  it , a Currawong  was   detected flying about the yard. Crumpled, the nest, near  a  fence , was picked up and examined, its intricate structure  and  components  impressive .
