It is the story of the 1928-l929 British ground- breaking scientific expedition to Low Isles , Queensland, and an overview of its legacies .
The aim of the mission was to study the Great Barrier Reef and find out what makes it, plant and animal life tick . It is said it was the first time any of the expedition had seen coral .
The book includes images from the extensive Sir Charles Maurice Yonge Collection now in the JCU library collection . Yonge led the l928 expedition and wrote two books related to it in l930, became an internationally acclaimed marime zoologist .
A reef was named after Yonge and he is represented in the Townsville Museum of Underwate Art. The ebook will be available on jcu,pressbooks.publyonge .
A recent welcome donation from the Smithsonian Institution of America to JCU is an 1895 two volume set of books on deep sea fish of the world . They have been placed in the Special Collections rare books section .
