ISLAND CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITY

Shipping Reporter special

Worthy of  mainland media coverage  in  these  depressed and  locked down times  is  the  wide range  of  building  and  other  activity  on Magnetic Island , including  this "4G"phone  tower  upgrade  being  constructed  for  Optus atop the Arcadia  Hotel. It has  involved bringing  a large mobile crane,  below ,  to  the  island , the newsagency in the front of the photo.
Our waterfront scribe hastens to point out it is said to be  4G-not 5G , which deranged conspiracy followers in England and America   claim  spreads coronavirus, and have even been burning  down some  towers!!!! In normal  times , a crane would  usually receive media attention , but then  the out of touch  mainland  media  coverage  of  Townsville's  Jewel in the Crown leaves a  lot  to be desired.

Barge loaded with commercial and trade  vehicles, above , involved in various projects, departing  the island .

Overlooking the marina , a two storey building , below ,  is under construction . There is talk of  plans  for a house on  a vacant  block not far away . A number   of  residences have  had  new kitchen cupboards installed in recent  months , others  are  being renovated ,  repairs  carried out , irrigation systems installed ,extensive planting of tropical fruit trees.
The island's hardware store is exceptionally  busy supplying  tradesmen  and residents. Gardening , it seems , is  popular  as  it  is elsewhere in the nation.  Local trademen report  busy  times . There is so much building going on that some of the  rusting  barricade    which  used  to  run  along  the  walkway from the ferry terminal past "The Hole" , put in stacks , appears to have been  recycled   on   a   construction  site.
