NEW ZEALAND NAUTICAL ODDITY

Tattered and  torn , possibly  more than a  100 years old  , the above  part   of this document contains  vital  information in rhyming verse  for  the rules of the road at  sea.  Another  section  explains  the various  markings  on the lead  line used  for  taking  soundings .

A  coloured drawing of  Mount Egmont  may have  been inspired by the 1903  wreck of  the  SS Gairloch  , three miles north of Cape Egmont.
A court of inquiry found the master did not keep a log , had  committed  an error of judgment in sailing so close to shore in poor visibility , suspended his certificate  for  three months  and  ordered  him    pay 20 pounds   towards  the  cost of  the  inquiry.
