1960S TIME MACHINE IMAGES , #1

The  Northern Territory from  Darwin to Elcho Island

Methodist Overseas Missions  supply  boats  Warawi and Larrpan ll in Darwin , top, which serviced  Aboriginal settlements  along the Arnhem Land coast  to Elcho Island  where  the  MMA  aerial service linked  the island  with Darwin . Elcho is the place where the yacht Sea Fox, owned by American actor and magician  John  Calvert  crashed over  on  its  side. One of  the passengers was a  chain smoking chimpanzee, dubiously claimed to have been Tarzan's second best friend after Jane . The  battered yacht  was eventually brought  to  Darwin  by   marine   diver  Carl  Atkinson.

Papua New Guinea , Port Moresby

Large  seagoing  lakatois  near Hanuabadu , close to the Koki market,   on  which people lived  and traded . At night the area reverberated to the sound of  loud drum beats . Photo  taken  at  the  time of the Sogeri Show , reached along a rough  track which  passed  by Rouna Falls ,  and  the South Pacific  Basketball  Championships . Papuans had not long had the right to  drink alcohol and beer was served in paper  cups  because  when  first  served up in a glass customers thought they  bought the  glass as well , resulting  in a sudden shortage of  drinking utensils .  In  1956 "mixed race" residents were given permits to imbibe. It was not until 1962 that Papuans were  given the  right to drink .
