GREEDY SAFE CRACKER ON THE LOOSE

Caught on  camera   in  the act of   breaking  into a  locked   birdcage on Magnetic Island  was  a   Sulphur-crested  Cockatoo , branded  the Cheeky Cocky  as   a  result .   The   empty , sturdy  cage   has   an   intricate  locking  device  which  requires  lifting  up  and  rotating  a  latch  , then   pulling   open   the   door.

No trouble for   a  smart   Aussie  Cockatoo  intent on  busting in  and   getting  at  a  closed   container   of    birdseed   inside .

Once entry  was  gained, the lid was   roughly  removed  from  the  container and  damaged ,  the  contents  scattered  about  during   the   messy   festive  season  raid .

Some time ago  an audacious Cocky  forced open  the upstairs   flyscreen on a  bedroom , got  inside , admired itself in the mirror  and  pulled  out  the pyjamas  of  the  lady of  the  house  from  under  a  pillow.

The  lesson here is to lock up your nighties  , chain your  cages  and  screw down  food  containers because   flocks  of  code- cracking   Cockies  are  currently  on  the   prowl  near  you .

Right   now  Cockatoos are  munching  the  fruit on citrus trees and continuing  to   gorge  themselves on  palm  nuts.

EXCAVATING KING TUT'S TOMB WITH FELLAHEEN PETE STEEDMAN

In a bid  to   prevent  the  spread  to  members of   family  and  friends   of  a  nasty  flu  which  has surfaced  in  the Townsville  region,  it was  decided  to  retreat  into  the   book -  lined   den ,   turning  it into  a   quarantine  station .

By  Peter  Simon

A   very low one  at  that  because    a  basic  folding  bed , stored in a corner, was  opened  up .  It   required   the   lifting and  restacking  of  plastic  archival   bins  , filled  with  more treasures than in the Egyptian Valley of the Kings , collected over  many decades   to  make room  for  the  bed . A  large    hairdresser's  chair  , bought  at  a  garage sale several years  ago , also  had  to  be  dragged  about.

The   bins had  been    filled  with  much of  the contents  of   a  bank  of     filing cabinets   some years ago   when  it  was  thought  that  because  of  a  serious operation   I  had,   we   should  pack  up  and  move  to  the  mainland .

We  did  not  move , the  binned  contents ,  and  the  rest  of  the  motley  treasures   left  to  moulder, gather  dust .

The first time  I   settled    down on the  uncomfortable  bed    and  looked  up  at  the  tomb   walls  ,I  felt  a touch of mal  de  mer  ,  when   I noticed that  two  nautical pictures  ,one of a sailing ship on a rough trip to  Australia ,  were  crooked  .

Fading stickers on those cabinets  indicated   they had once    contained  a  weird  range  of   material covering    New Zealand ,   the  Northern Territory  ,  crocodiles,  ballet ,  early motorbikes and  cars  ,  sheet music , pantomimes ,  first  day  covers  ,  even   Hitler.

Being  so  low  to the   ground,  on  the bed   , the titles on the      miscellaneous  books  on  the   bottom  shelf  of  the   nearest    large   bookcase, topped by a row of  old bottles  dug up  at Pine Creek and  Brock's Creek, in  the  Northern Territory  ,  could  be   read , deciphered  .

The  first book   pulled out and   rapidly   examined   was  the  biography of  Australian playwright   David Williamson   (The  Removalists  , Don's Party, The Club,et al  )   by  Brian  Kiernan . My  old journalist and political   mate  , Pete  Steedman , had   bought  Williamson's    residence , north of Melbourne, at Hurstbridge,  a  mud  brick structure , on  9 1/2 acres .

Steedman  is decribed in fhe book as  having been  one of the    New  Left  radicals at Monash University  , later  a federal Labor  parliamentarian  , the Member for  Casey , his  exciing   life covered in  great detail in  Little Darwin over the  years .

The book was placed on the bed next to me ....Soon  after  ,  my  wife's phone rang   and she appeared  at   the   sliding door of  the  den  / tip and announced it was  Pete Steedman  for  me ! In  his distinctive  voice, he announced he was  ringing from a Melbourne hospital  , where he  was  being treated for a a badly  infected  arm ,involving his lymph glands  ,following  the   removal  of  a  growth in an  earlier  operation .

I pointed out the  coincidence  that  I had  just  read about him in  the   Williamson  biography and  the book was next to  my gammy leg .

Pete  said he was  sharing  " a cell " with  a  woman    who  in  conversation  revealed she had been  in Darwin at the  time of  Cyclone Tracy .  It  just so happens   that  Steedman , who went to  Darwin after the cyclone  to provide  news  for  the many people evacuated throughout the nation  , and  drew up a report on  the  handling of   the  disaster  ,  how  to deal with   future  ones.

During  Pete's    recent   visits  to hospital   he took along with him  a copy of   my book , Big Jim ,  about the  great crusading   editor, James  Frederick  Bowditch , and   arranged  for  a  copy of the book to be sent to his  cell  mate  .

In the meantime, from the  uncomfortable  bed in the den   , which will probably lead to painful  haemorrhoids , several   dusty   drawers  were  opened   and  out  popped    Pete   Steedman  yet   again !!!!!!!!

This was in the form of a mailing tube    for   rolled up   items  sent to me by Steedman in Melbourne  through  parcel  post years ago  .  Out of  it  slipped   a huge  poster   of   Fabula  ,  the  curvy  Canberra  secretary , drawn by Gerald Carr,  who  wielded a    whip ,   in   the   Broadside   magazine  edited by Steedman in 1969.  If you took out a  Broadside subscription you received   the large Fabula poster . That's not the above  poster, it's her on  a   Broadside  cover  .

Withour a doubt , the other poster included  hairy , hippy Steedman , in l971,  in London,  posing with a   woman carrying an automatic  firearm  and a  young boy   on  the front cover  of  a  London  mock  version of the  Californian   counter  culture magazine  ,Berkeley Barb , which looked to change the world , supporting  civil rights  , anti-war   and   backing   numerous  counterculture   movements.

The   woman  on the cover  was  Nigerian model Mina Bird , the  boy, Dante Hughes, son of art  critic and  author, Robert  Hughes.

One of the   sellers of  Berkeley Barb , in the  San Francisco  finance district,  was  artist  Bucklee  Bell , of  Underground  Comix fame,  longtime capaigner  with strong views on politics, war, the environment .  One  of his paintings graces  the   LIttle Darwin   collection.

He set  up  a business  in Chiang Mai , Thailand , dealing in beads, textiles,  paintings   and   books .

Steedman  had attracted the  attention  of  Berkeley Barb  when he was   editor of  two  Melbourne university  newspapers,  opposed  to the Vietnam  War , conscription , censorship . It had even been suggested he should go   to  America and  address  students, but he was  confidentially informed by  a member of the United States Information Service, over a beer ,  in  Australia , that there was no way  he  would be  allowed  into  the country .

Other   unearthed ,  forgotten   treasure's  from King Tut's  Tomb  will be  run in  coming  weeks  if  the  quarantine station is  not  napalmed   to  prevent the   North  from being overrun  by  the dreaded  lurgy.

THE LATEST BUZZ ON RAIN ORCHIDS

After  a  night of    monsoonal   downpour  , it  seems   fitting  to   point  out  a  strange  aspect of    Rain   Orchids    observed   in   recent   weeks.

While checking   potplants , it was discovered   that   the long stems of  the orchids   which  previously  displayed  an array    of   white  flowers , supposed  to  indicate   rain  in  the     near   future , there were many   banded   flying   insects  , a   close  up  photo above .

Intriguingly, they  seemed  to  have attached   themselves  to  the dried  base  of  a  flower , more than  10  on one stem.   Disturbed, they  flew   away , came  back  and  again  took up positions  on old flower sights. Must be some nectar, something   tasty   there ?    Many of  the  insects were   noticed  back  on  the orchids  after  the  rain .

MURDER ? / CAPRICORNIA / HIPPIES

Esteemed  readers  of   this  blog  are  aware  that   Darwin agronomist and   activist  Robert Wesley-Smith  has  fabulous, wide ranging  files  which include  historic  photos, newspaper  clippings , postcards,  ephemera , items from  which   have  been  run  in  Little  Darwin .

You  never  know what  to  expect  when    Wesley-Smith sends  you an email , often with a range of  unusual material  .   We  did a  double  take  recently   when  we opened up  a message  and found on close examination what  looked   like  a  grotesque ,  bloodied  brain  on  the  bow  of  a  canoe in  a spooky  location .   Please  explain , Wes.

Turns out it  is not a murder scene , but  a  photo he  took  exploring the  rapidly  rising  wetlands on  his rural  property  and  the  object on  the  bow  is   foam  filling  he  used to patch up  all the  vessel's  holes , to  prevent a TItanic  event .  A  child  going for  a  ride in  the  canoe  shrieked  in  horror  when   she  spotted  the  red  blob .

A  recent  Wes  special   included  the  above   map of   Capricornia  from an exhibition  for  the  book of the  same  name , about the Northern Territory , by Xavier Herbert   , which won  the   l938 Sesqui-Centenary  Award ,  and an  old clipping  about   journalist / author  Douglas Lockwood  and  his wife, Ruth .

No sooner   had we   inspected this material  than  , from another source, came a  story written by the   Northern Territory  Library , about the   time  when  many  hippies  passed through  Darwin on the  so-called  hippie  route  to  and  from  Asia .

The  hippies congregated at  Lameroo Beach  , not far from the Darwin CBD, and  even built  houses in  the  waterfront  trees  , it  becoming  known as  the Royal Lameroo Hotel , evacuated when the Wet arrived,  the   rough  dwellings  subject  of   an  essay  by   architect  Peter  Dermoudy .

We seem to   recall  that  a hippy  girl  who  flew   into   Darwin from Portuguese Timor had  attracted the  attention of a Customs officer  when  something   was  noticed  jumping about under  her   floppy dress . Questioned , she  said it  was  "her baby " - a young monkey  she  had bought -- and  begged  officials  not  to   impound  it .

The  Library article  on hippies   surprisingly  listed  Wesley-Smith as one of its  sources of information .  Naturally, we    asked  him   to explain  his   connection with  hippies.   Seems  he was not aware of the  particular    report ,  but  admitted   he wrote a letter to the  Northern Territory News  likening  the impact of   hippies   on   Lameroo   as  being  similar to  cattle overstocking   grazing  land.

While  it  might be okay for  50 hippies to gather   wood  from  local trees and build   houses , the  impact  of   200  wood  gathers   was   undesirable .

QUEEN STROKED BY COMMONER !

When  Paul Keating  placed a  welcoming , guiding  hand  on  Queen  Elizabeth's back  , the Pommie tabloids went  berserk , called  him the  Lizard of  Oz . Right now , another notable  Aussie  is   so close to  the Queen of  the  Jungle   that  he  plays  with  her    hair !!!

He  is  that  dashing , likeable rogue, known  as  Cranky  Currawong ,above,  who  , unannounced  by  any  palace  flunkey, flew into the royal   estate  and  began to  dominate  it   during  the  festive  season . He seems to have    become  almost  as   popular  as  Sir   Francis  Drake   was   with  the  Virgin Queen .

Audaciously,   he   regularly  lands on  the back of  the Queen's outside throne ,  reaches  over  and   plays  with  her  locks  ,  cheekily  following  up with  a  demand to  be   fed  choice   morsels   from  the  royal   pantry.

Over  the  years   the  Queen  has   received  close  attention from   many    adoring  birds  . There  was , for  example ,  the  fledgling Torres Strait Pigeon, nicknamed  Miss  Wong,   who   liked  climbing onto  her  shoulder  for  a  cuddle.

And who can  forget   that  salty  tongued  sailor, Larry the celebrity  Lorikeet , from   Mission Beach  , who  boarded  with the   Queen  several  times ? While residing in the royal  lodge   he  caused   confusion by imitating the ringing   of   a  telephone  and  loudly  muttering, "Bugger, bugger, bugger !"

Larry  , named after the cyclone in which he was  injured , was   a real  party  animal   and   is  shown above helping himself  to  nibbles aboard a  yacht , with   adoring   female  company.

Larry  was so popular he  had   rum named after him -Captain Larry-his smiling   portrait   on   the   label .

A  Coucal  named  Dracula  ,on the prowl below,  used to call on  the  Queen ,but was asked to move on  after  taking  a  close  interest  in  her   jugular  vein  and  flashing  his  incisors .
