The latest exhibition in Magnetic Island's Louver Gallery includes two unusual ceramic works by Jenny Mulcahy in which death adders feature. The above one, White still life with adder , is prized at $285 ; the other serpent is below .
Opened last year, the gallery , which showcases the wide ranging artistic talent on Magnetic Island , has so far held eight successful exhibitions , apparently without any mainland media coverage . So much for the Jewel in Townsville's Crown oft repeated title for the island , media overage of it pitiful.
An earlier exhibition held in conjunction with Amnesty International , in part , covered the plight of refugees, also Julian Assange of Wikileaks , who once lived on the island .
A striking section was devoted to the so called Biloela girls, above , and their Tamil parents . After the exhibition , some of the items were transported to Biloela , western Queensland, for a special display planned to further highlight the family , which locals are keen to have come back and reside in their town .
Another work of art inspired by the Biloela Girls is being made on the island , not picked up by the Townsville scribes who have long been in hibernation when it comes to covering island news and many other items of interest.
There was speculation at the weekend that the Biloela Girls would feature in the election because of the sudden release from a Melbourne Hotel of refugees locked up for years .
