Incheon ,South Korea , has featured in major historical conflicts , including the 1904 Russo-Japanese Battle of Chemulpo Bay and the Korean War of 1950-53 , fought between North Korea, supported by Communist China, and South Korea , backed by the United Nations . During the latter action, US Marines , under General Douglas MacArthur , in an amphibious invasion designed to relieve pressure on Pusan, stormed ashore at Incheon in September 1950 and obtained a decisive victory . The USS Incheon was named after the event .
