THE CASE OF THE MISSING DRAGON

Because  Little Darwin and  its  odd correspondents are often  close  to  nature, we were asked  to  keep  an eye out  for  a  bearded dragon  called Lewis   which  somehow  had   disappeared  from   a  cage .

It seems Lewis-not sure if he was named after the  British detective who solves many murders- had  been   given  to  some   people  to  look after while  its  owners were  away  ; it  was  placed   in  what  was thought to be  a  secure  enclosure.

It was feared  a  bird of prey may  have swooped down and grabbed  the lizard . Months  went  by  , and despite much searching ,  there was no  sign of the dragon.

A Little Darwin  member , a  sharp- eyed Kiwi,  strolling  about her garden  picking up fallen  fronds and looking at  plants,  received a  fright .She  became involved  in  what  is clearly   a  heart  warming   reptilian  version  of   Lassie  Come  Home,

Peering out at her  from a  shrub ,above,  was  what looked like   a small New Zealand  Tuatara lizard .  On closer examination, she  saw it had a beard and realised  It  was   missing  Lewis,

She ran to the house   from  whence  the  dragon had  mysteriously  disappeared  and excitedly  broke  the  welcome  news  that  Lewis  had  almost   come  home.

The placid dragon was last seen draped about the shoulder  of the   delighted  lizard  carer.

FOOTNOTE : The spelling  of the lizard's name is not certain, so we  unreservedly   apologise  in advance   to  the  dragon if  it  is wrong
