VISITORS FROM ANOTHER WORLD

Into  Cairns  recently  sailed the  planet's  largest privately owned residential yacht, The World, strictly for the filthy rich , on a two month  circumnavigation of  Australia, which started in Hong Kong , photographed by  one of  our wage slave  local  correspondents  on   an  early morning  jog.

While thousands of  people were  quarantined on the cruise ship  Diamond Princess  off   Yokohama  at the  time , keen to come ashore in a fit state ,  some   passengers on  The World reside permanently  in great luxury, it having  a maximum  capacity of  only  150-200 passengers.  No  sweaty backpackers, hoi-polloi  allowed aboard-you need many millions  before you can apply  to   buy  space and  then you  are  closely  vetted .

Our Shipping Reporter, with a vast knowledge of  wayside inns and waterfront  grog  shops  , pointed out  the   Hemingway's Brewery  sign  in the photo  is  the  name of  a  drinking and eating  establishment  with  a  19metre long bar and 50 taps in the  heritage  listed  Cairns  cruise  liner  terminal.

PLAN BEE WITH TOMATO SAUCE

One of the highly intelligent lizards , above , on the premises   has tapped into a regular source of healthy  tucker : native bees  which  have  set  up a  nest in  the  brickwork  of  Little  Darwin's  front  verandah .  The  lizard patrols the  verandah   leisurely  downing  one  from  time  to time  as  they  buzz in and out of the cracks .  The well  stocked  bee  pantry  is  not  without  dangers -the lizard lost part of its tail  about a week  ago , probably due to  a Kookaburra attack, there  being  a  lot  about .
Part of the  lizard's territory includes a  nearby decorated  paver  where it  posed  for  the  camera  months ago . With so many beehives   destroyed , along  with vasty tracts of   blossom bearing   bush in  Australia ,  honey  could become as valuable as  gold . When this  happens ,  we  will have to hire a   front end  loader, tear up the  verandah , erect a   sign  telling callers to  use  the rear  tradesmens' entrance ,  and  cash  in  the  honeycomb content  to   finance  launching  an  ICBM  on  the  Coalition  and  all   their  climate change  denying  boneheaded   buddies .

SLIP, SLOP ,SLAP, SLAP, SLAP,SLAP,SLAP UNHAPPY DAZE

The heatwave in North Queensland has brought out  hordes of  suckers. A woman  showering found  herself under attack by  about  10 March Flies  all intent on  sucking some part of her  body . Wrapped in a towel, she  dashed dripping  into the kitchen and  got the fly spray, some  of  the daid critters shown here .

On Magnetic Island , our Shipping Reporter , held up at  a rare  traffic light  installed to enable   repair  work on a wooden walkway  munched by whiteants , was   himself  attacked  by   the flies   which  flew in through  the open car windows . He  sat there  beating off  the  persistant   pests , some of which went  for  his  legs,  with his   hat ; while whacking   them , a  large moth flew in and disappeared under   the passenger  seat . It would have made a good setting for a Hitchcock horror movie .
Backpackers walking about the  island  and tourists travelling in topless cars  made  easy targets,  much slapping and squealing   resulting .

A  garden  party   at  the Germanic  Queen of the Jungle's residence resulted  in  scores of  the flies  being  swatted  by  guests  on  their  lederhosen,  like a scene from a drunken  Oktoberfest.  Down  at Horseshoe Bay , smaller, but   equally  vicious  , striped  Zebra Flies  , hooked  on   haemoglobin ,  made  their  presence  known.

NO BALE FOR LIBERAL LEADER

Water  torture  exposed  by  our  Shipping  Reporter

High and certainly not dry on the Picnic Bay , Magnetic Island, foreshore is  this  unusual  link with  the  maritime  past , apparently a   longboat  from  the  dredge named  after  Sir  Thomas  Alfred  Hiley, a  former  leader of the Queensland  Liberal Party  and  the state's Treasurer  from  1957-l965.

The  bow part  is  full  of  foul smelling  water which  gives  the  impression it has been there for a long time. Odd objects visible  within the mess , near  the rusting  levers of government , give the shock impression  that they could almost  be replicas of  private  parts  of  the  knight's anatomy !!!

Maiden aunts are warned that the object floating near the pointy end of  the boat strongly resembles  the honourable member's member and may induce a  touch of the  vapours.

The  waterfront  roundsman , the only one north of Curl Curl , says it  reflects  badly on the Liberal  Party that  a vessel named after   a onetime Liberal Leader  and a  former  Queensland treasurer , a chartered accountant no less  ,  is   now neglected , rotting  away .

He suggests  the  craft  be  quickly  emptied , refurbished  by  cladders  of  buildings with inflammable  panels   and  donated  to the  seasick   members of  the  National  Party  mutineers  so  that the  motley crew  can  all  try and   pull  in  the same direction - towards Atlantis  ,   in  the  middle  of  the  Sargasso Sea , never  to  be  seen  again , devoured by  a school of  Kraken from   the  ABC's  Mad  As  Hell  bizarre  props  department .

ODE TO COAL / PACIFIST'S NIGHTMARES /TUBERCULOSIS

 New  Zealand   Literary  Topics
Two slim  volumes, New Zealand Best poems of  1938 and  New Zealand New Writing No.3, June l944 ,  bought  in  Auckland  about  40 years , were recently pulled from   the  files  and  made  an  interesting reread, turning  up  overlooked  content  of  note ,  some  contemporary issues , especially  in respect of  war veterans , their   treatment  and   the  high  incidence  of  suicide .

The  book  of   poems , selected  by C.A. Marris, once belonged to Helena Henderson (1913 to l968) , the author of  two , one  Returned Soldier , about  a pacifist  who went away and fought in WWl, returning  to  a  little  cottage provided by the  government , tending  the  garden,  the small  lawn , shining  the taps , making  bird  cages and  baskets , leading a quiet  life .  Except...

But in the dreadful midnight hours ,
Borne in the terror's icy breath,
Come Eitel, Friedrich, Hans and Paul ,
Good men and  true  he  sent to  Death .

Apart  from writing  poetry, Henderson  was  a  novelist , lived on a yacht  for some years , inspired  women   to write  , even  produced books under a  male  name . She was  encouraged  to write by her  mother  who  worked on the  Christchurch Press  newspaper   and  also  wrote poems and essays . In the  case of Helena's  storekeeper  father, he  faked  his  suicide the night before  she , a  Catholic ,  married  in  a  registry  office.
With  so much  debate  currently going on about  fossil fuel  and   the affect on the climate , a 1944 poem  praising  coal  by Anton Vogt,  born in Norway, a NZ schoolteacher , at  Reefton  , a coal  mining town , stood out . He had written two volumes of poetry, the latest , Poems  for  a  War  and a play soon to be in print and on stage .

The  treatment  of  Tuberculosis was  the subject of a  short story of interest to this blogger's wife who worked with TB patients , mainly Maoris, when she was  a nurse  at Hamilton,  in   the  North Island   of   New Zealand ,  in the  l950s.  In those days patients  were  placed  in beds  out  on  open  verandahs  to  be  exposed to  the cool , clean  air  and  sunshine. Now  it  seems  resistant TB is making a  strong comeback , especially in PNG with limited resources  and facilities , cases  turning up  in  the Torres  Strait .

There is an emotive short story, The Woods no More, by R. Gilberd  who had spent most of  his  adult life scrub-cutting , farming , public works , bush-felling , then a slaughterman in the freezing works at Gisborne  and representing the union  on  the local Trades Council .

There are  several  poems at the back of  the book  dealing  with  the war ... Killed In Action, The Leader  Makes Plans  (to take over the world , then what ? ), Enemy Aircraft  Overhead , Stalingrad , l943.

Some of  the contributors became   involved  in the  Australian literary world. Poet ,  editor , literary critic , short story writer  , essayist  and   publisher  Douglas Stewart ,  for example , became literary  editor  of   The  Bulletin , Sydney, for  20 years  and was   described  as  the   greatest  all  rounder of  literature in  modern Australia . Three of  his works appeared  in  the  l938  book of  poems . He wrote the  biographies  of  prominent Australians ,the artist  Norman Lindsay  and  poet  Kenneth Slessor .
