ART EXHIBITION IS A WOW

Modern  Miss Fish Fingers dressed  up  for a  Saturday night  romp at a  special  seafood  platter and Guinness  night  at  Molly Malone's   in Townsville .

Strangely not mentioned in  this  year's Queen's Birthday  honours list  for colonials, is  this  shy,  dolled  up  person said to be close to   Townsville  Enterprise . These striking  garments are   from  the WOW,World of Wearable Art  Exhibition  at  the  Perc  Tucker  Gallery , Townsville , at the start of  an international   tour  by  highly  imaginative New Zealand  garment  technicians. It would  be an act of Christian  charity by  these  talented  Kiwis if  they would  advise some of   the  less than impressive string and other  dangling  bits  pullers   in the city how to take advantage of  its  many and  varied  attractions, legions of talented, artistic and  educated people. WOW runs to July 12 . Photographic bacon  brought home  by  Abra.

SPY TAKES A TUMBLE

In  the  Darwin area , armed with a new camera  to get pictorial evidence of another outrage against  the landscape ,  a  noted  activist , gingerly clambered  up  a fence , slowly  eased  his  leg over the top strand of  wire  thought to be electrified...and  fell to the ground. This  Icarus  episode  has caused  this  writer,  in a delicate state of health  due to bronchitis ,  to giggle insanely ,  clutch  his chest  and spit  like a camel.  Unless  this extremely scruffy   James  Bond   type  sends   some  hush  money, we will  publish his  name  and  the  place he was  spying on .

THE ADVENTURES OF DON QUIXOTE IN AUSTRALIA #2

Forced  to  flee to  France  after  bloodbath

Salvador Torrents (1885-1951), a dedicated  anarchist, fled from  Spain to France from his hometown ,  Mataroa , in Catalania ,  following  the crackdown  after the  bloody  July  1909   uprising  in  Barcelona , called  the Tragic Week . What began as a one day strike against sending conscript  troops  to  an  unpopular  war in  Morocco  exploded into a week of bloody  fighting  in which  rampaging  masses  took out  their pent up anger  not only on the government and religious institutions, the latter seen  as allies  of the rich , land owners  and  aristocracy.

By Peter Simon

Corpses were dug  up , clergy were killed , about 50  churches, monasteries and convents were burned   down  in  an orgy of   ferocity   like  the sacking of the Aztec empire  by  the Spanish Conquistadors. A marked man because of his known views ,Torrents, like so many, fled to France.

Martyr Ferrer
As a  young  man  he  had  joined Juventud Republicana , hoping to see the overthrow of  the monarchy  and  social , economic  and  political reforms to  improve the  lot of  dirt poor Catalan  residents.   Later, with some  ex republicans  , he became  a member of  an  anarchist group .  A  person who  had a major impact on Salvador and  his actions  throughout  his life  was  the  rationalist  education  reformer , Francisco Ferrer . Education , said Ferrer , would play a central role in the creation  of  a revolutionary society ; he wrote a book , The Modern School, and  schools were  set  up for working class people  teaching   basic  literacy , literature  , natural  science  and Darwinism . His ideas were picked up overseas and a school based on  his  concept was started in New York.

In France, Torrents, without money and papers , struggled , mixed with other Spanish refugees  and  while there word came through  that  Francesco Ferrer and others  blamed for the Barcelona uprising were lined up and shot . Torrents’   daughter , born in Spain, while he was in France , was  named Paz Universal( Peace  Universal ),  in  honour  of   Ferrer's daughter, Paz  , whose father was executed a  few  days  before   her  birth .

In the Salvador Torrents  papers in Special Collections , Eddie Koiki Mabo library,  James Cook University, Townsville, there are numerous French postcards.  Although  damaged , a  1910 real photo  postcard, below, from  Toulouse    shows a  group of  apparent  working men, who could have been from a factory where he worked in Lyon  about  to  have  a  party,  below, one  holding  a  duck or a rabbit , bottles  visible.
There  are several coloured  mass produced postcards which portray well dressed family  groups,  one  with  musical instruments ... perhaps appealing  to  Torrent’s  idealised  desire  for families, having experienced the  extreme poverty, religious superstition , oppression of the  masses  and  ignorance in  Spain, where half  the adult  population could not read  and  the  arrival of  the  first  train was  called  the work of  the  Devil  by clerics.

Australia  is mentioned  several times in postcards. A surprise  postcard  shows an airship, a dirigible , over the bridge  at  Saint Cloud, which could  either be the Republique  or one of the airships built by Brazilian pioneer aviator  Alberto Santos-Dumont, said to have made the first truly successful airship  flight from  the Aero Club de France  field at  Parc Saint Cloud  to the Eiffel Tower and  back  in  less  than  30 minutes.Keenly interested in modern technical and scientific inventions, the airship would have attracted  Salvador's attention

After  several years in Paris, Torrents went back   to Spain to see his family, his daughter for  the first  time , but found it impossible to get  work , so he returned to  France.   With the  outbreak of  war   he was   shocked by the response of the French socialists  , so  set  sail  in  1915  for  Australia  seeking a new life, the fare advanced by a Spanish friend  in Melbourne.

Like  Don Quixote  of    inspirational   fame , he took with him  a  Sancho Panza-like   faithful  friend from  Mataroa, Juan  Jordana,  who over the  decades  would become  involved  with him in  many  adventures in  this  far away  country. Jordana   and Torrents had lodged together when they worked in a factory   . NEXT: First impressions  of  Australia and  the Spanish connection with  the  Northern Territory  and  North  Queensland.

1960S TIME MACHINE IMAGES , #1

The  Northern Territory from  Darwin to Elcho Island

Methodist Overseas Missions  supply  boats  Warawi and Larrpan ll in Darwin , top, which serviced  Aboriginal settlements  along the Arnhem Land coast  to Elcho Island  where  the  MMA  aerial service linked  the island  with Darwin . Elcho is the place where the yacht Sea Fox, owned by American actor and magician  John  Calvert  crashed over  on  its  side. One of  the passengers was a  chain smoking chimpanzee, dubiously claimed to have been Tarzan's second best friend after Jane . The  battered yacht  was eventually brought  to  Darwin  by   marine   diver  Carl  Atkinson.

Papua New Guinea , Port Moresby

Large  seagoing  lakatois  near Hanuabadu , close to the Koki market,   on  which people lived  and traded . At night the area reverberated to the sound of  loud drum beats . Photo  taken  at  the  time of the Sogeri Show , reached along a rough  track which  passed  by Rouna Falls ,  and  the South Pacific  Basketball  Championships . Papuans had not long had the right to  drink alcohol and beer was served in paper  cups  because  when  first  served up in a glass customers thought they  bought the  glass as well , resulting  in a sudden shortage of  drinking utensils .  In  1956 "mixed race" residents were given permits to imbibe. It was not until 1962 that Papuans were  given the  right to drink .

WORLD EXCLUSIVE : PARLIAMENT NOW UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP DUE TO BUCKLEE BELL

Just as transnational corporations  and  the  industrial/military complex  really run  America , Little  Darwin  now  owns  Parliament  and  we  plan to  make some  major  changes in  the  nation.

The  revolution has started : first off ,  the Speaker  will be dipped in batter then swirled about in recycled fish  and chips oil  ; Up  the Workers! will  become the new  national anthem ; Johnny Depp will be injected  with Pentagon anthrax in mistake for vitamin A ; Christopher Pyne  will  be regularly  fired out  of  a rusty  Collins Class submarine torpedo tube without a caul over his head so  that he  can  continue babbling , a  bit  like  fun  waterboarding  ; Tony Abbott and Joe Hockey will ride for Team Tampon in the next  Tour de France ; shock jocks  will  have their tongues torn out  by eagles ; Andrew Bolt , Gerard Henderson and several others on a long list  will be  placed in a leaky  bumboat, towed out to sea near a Chinese expanding  sandbar and used  for  low  level bombing  practise   by  the   RAAF.

Only  kiddingLittle Darwin is now the proud owner of American artist  Bucklee Bell’s painting, Parliament, below, and we are  mad with the power and new kickapoo  medication. The politicians are  represented as uniformly  grey, block like  critters; the only one a  bit different  seems to be  the Ned Kelly  figure in  the  bottom right of  the  picture .
Bucklee sent  the surprise present to us from Chiang Mai, Thailand, as a mark of  esteem for  this steam driven   blog . Ever-thoughtful and law abiding , Bucklee dismantled  the wooden  frame over which  the  canvas was  stretched  as  he  did not want to  introduce  any   exotic pests into  Australia  as  we  have  a surfeit  of  local mugwumps  in  political, media , business  and  so- called  celebrity  circles .

MAN IN THE IRON MASK : ASSANGE

Early demonstration outside Federal government  office  in Townsville against  treatment of  Julian Assange...now a  forgotten  man  by pedestrian  local  media . There was a  similar  show of   support  on  nearby  Magnetic  Island.

WikiLeaks  founder Julian Assange is the subject of a wide ranging article  by award  winning American columnist, investigative reporter and author, Amy Goodman, in the  highly commended independent journalism website NationofChange. Executive Director of Democracy Now!, a daily ad free news show broadcast  over 1300 public TV and radio stations  worldwide, Goodman visited Assange in  the  Ecuadorian  Embassy in London.

Even though Assange spent time  with his mother on Magnetic Island, North Queensland, when  he  was  a  boy  and it  was  suggested that a monument should be  erected on  the  island  to mark  that  fact when he was  red hot news  , the Townsville Bulletin and   Queensland  media generally have forgotten him.

Goodman mentions that Assange , though confined to the embassy and surrounded by UK police, still continues to post important information , including  details of  the secret  talks  going on over  the Trans Pacific Partnership   agreement, pushed by  President Obama and Australian Trade Minister Andrew Robb   , which  involves  Australia losing more sovereignty , and  has even  been  the  subject of objection  by   some  Democrats  in  America.

If  Assange  had  played  footy on the  island or owned a rabid dog  he  might  rate an occasional  para   in the  38 page   special rugby league   liftouts  in the Townsville Bulletin.  The Assange affair and  other important  local matters  clearly  indicate  Townsville  media  needs  a  shake  up.
Cartoon  by  George  Hirst, death adder bitten  editor of  gutsy  online  newspaper , Magnetic Times .Yet another  gathering of worthies  has been held in Townsville to decide  the way forward for the city after  150 years of settlement.  The usual PR type jargon was trotted out .  The gathering was told ,however,  that after the casino and The Strand,  what was there to see in Townsville . Gasp . Over on Magnetic Island there could  be a giant fountain  to real freedom of  information  for  the masses ,   a  national  hero  and  a brave  man , disowned by the bulk of  timorous Australian  politicians infused with the blind All The Way With LBJ mentality,  hounded by the forces of darkness, including  the baying  right wing   media  maddies  of  America  who  want  Assange hung, drawn  and  quartered .

NED KELLY LINK WITH GALLIPOLI

Hands up  in the air  all  those  who think  it inconceivable that  there is a Ned Kelly connection with  Gallipoli.  Well, all you doubters , try this for size. As part of the nation- wide centenary the Australian War Museum launched  a travelling  exhibition of  Gallipoli  photographs  by  Sir  Charles Ryan , a leading  Melbourne surgeon and a senior military officer, who is said to have treated Ned  Kelly at  Glenrowan after  the  shootout  and  the bushranger’s  capture . Ryan served  as  a doctor in  the Turkish  Army in 1877-78 and  was  decorated   by  the  Turks .
