Shortly before her recent death from cancer , she keenly supported a Little Darwin report that a Darwin artist had suggested Magnetic Island should hold an art festival in memory of the mysterious mermaid which was placed on rocks at the entrance to the island's safe harbour - and was subbsequently torn apart by vandals.
The sleepy mainland media gave slight coverage to the mermaid and her terrible dismemberment .
However, our Shipping Reporter, the only one north of Bondi, gave her great coverage, even traced the man who brought her to the island from Victoria and placed her on the rocks ; he is outraged by her treatment.
An arty island resident rewarded the waterfront roundsman for his deep concern about the poor mermaid by making him not one but two mermaid dolls , which he keeps near his hammock.
