HIGH AND DRY ART

While wading about  the Townsville waterfront  during the  king tide , our Shipping Reporter , the only one north of   Bondi ,  was shocked to see   what   looked  like  disheveled   people  locked  up  behind a  high wire fence in  a  Pacific Marine  Group  yard.

On closer examination , he discovered they appeared to be two  statues, perhaps made from  metal , on the  back  of  or  standing next  to  a  truck .

In  any  case , there  was  clearly  an  interesting  story  to  be   had , so he contacted  Pacific Marine , a big player  in  the port of   Townsville,   with  involvement  elsewhere in  the   nation  and   Pacific.

It  seems the  statues  are   part  of  Townsville's  Museum  of  Underwater Art designed to promote conservation of the Great Barrier Reef and provide snorkelling and  scuba diving attractions . Made by British sculptor Jason deCaires  Taylor, these  two  are  waiting  to  be  placed  in  position.

Fourteen  days  ago  Paciific Marine   marked  its  completion   of   deepening   Townsville's    shipping  channel   which  will   enable   larger   vessels  , including  cruise  and   military  ships  to  call .
