ONE HELLUVA INDIAN SUMMER

Bothersome  birds add to heatwave warnings for North Australia

In warming  Townsville ,  32- 34 degrees, like Darwin, Indian  Mynah  birds  are  frantically  building  nests  next  to  air conditioners, like the one above ,surely  an indication of  torrid  times  ahead?

The writer of this post has had to  remove  about a dozen  nests   from  two adjoining properties . No sooner had he removed one , than  the impudent birds  flew  next door and  began quickly  building  a  new  nest  there .

It was like being under  attack  ; clamber out of  bed  in the morning , look outside, and  there were Indian  Mynahs constructing another blankety blank   nest   on  a  conditioner that   had been cleared  several  times  the  day  before,  each time  raising  a  sweat . Warm  weather caused a  smoke  alarm  to  go off in one residence .

Indian Mynahs were introduced in  Australia in 1880 to control insect pests  and are now one of the most common and invasive  species in eastern Australia , a  threat to native  birds. A member of the Starling family , they have  even  been  declared Australia's most hated animal in surveys.
