One   stall , in the grounds of the Mundingburra State School,Townsville, was devotated  to  a  wide-ranging  display of early sewing  machines from around the  word .

Music boxes, militaria, books (bought three, should have  been more, sob ) , furniture, lamps, pottery, souvenir spoons, clothing, records, bags made out of  tea  towels , fancy aprons  and  much  more at  monthly Sunday   market.

 Douglas Stewart   Fine  Books,   Melbourne,  is  exhibiting  in  this  weekend's  fair  which  has  been  running  for  40 years. The  bookshop's offerings  include the  following :

* Important l6th-l8th century  works on Christianity in Japan ,starting with a number  of very scarce Jesuit imprints of the l570s  and  l580s.

* Sparrman's account  of  Captain Cook's second voyage, with tapa cloth samples, USD $50,000 .

* l8th - l9th century Filipiana.

* A set of early editions of Ramusio's 16th century travel opus Navigatori et  viaggi. A leaf  from the Gutenberg Bible is offered  at  USD  $135,000

Feathers, especially those of the poor ostrich , were  all  the  rage  in  Australia  in 1916  as  this   Sydney  newspaper  advertisement  shows . And if you really wanted  to stand  out in a crowd, you were advised  to  let  your  hair  , not   down ,  but  apparently  up  to  great heights  with a daily tonic dressing  of   Koko  to  stimulate growth.
