Townsville's civic and military organisations appear unable to work out proper daily and long time care and attention of the city's war memorials . The media also is remiss in failing to pick up and cover this obvious unsatisfactory situation . Last Friday the Victory in the Pacific memorial fountain , on the Civic Pride Trail, was again showing continuing signs of neglect .
The top photo shows what appears to be a green hand towel which had been floating about in there for weeks now sitting on the brickwork . In the middle is a close up of cans which have been submerged for so long that they have started to corrode and the sieve for the fountain was almost blocked with sucked in rubbish , causing the entire fountain system to froth , not play as high as normal .
Seen in the two chambers were assorted cans , a cigarette lighter bobbing about , plastic spoons , pieces of wood , palm fronds , stones . Still visible at the back of the fountain was broken glass seen there before Anzac Day .
The memorial is a short distance from the Townsville Bulletin office.
