Recently discovered in a North Queensland op shop was the above souvenir booklet produced to mark the opening of the Houghton Highway by the Queensland Premier, Joh. Bjelke-Petersen , pictured below, on December 20, l979.
The bridge duplicated the old Hornibrook Highway from Redcliffe to Sandgate. The publisher of the souvenir decided it should have a title variation on the Charles Dickens historical novel , Tale of Two Cities , thus became a Tale of Two Bridges , Hornibrook and Houghton Highways .
The Hornibrook Highway was officially opened in October l935. In l979 it was announced a limited edition, 500 copies, of the l935 Hornibrook souvenir book was being reprinted and with the above souvenir would be encased in a hard bound cover with gold lettering , priced at $12.50.
