THE RACE WHICH STOPPED THE WAR



From the Little Darwin WW11 collection comes this 1943 photograph taken at Finschhafen, New Guinea, of AIF troops drawing a Melbourne Cup sweep on the morning of the race. An officer puffing on a cigarette,standing, is looking on as slips for the sweep are prepared by Private B.K. Ashton, South Australia, Corporal A.E.Walmsley,Western Australia , and Lieutenant - Corporal F. J. Corbett. The winner that year was Dark Felt, the prize money a mere 7700 pounds ,15,400 dollars.
